SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Sophomore Andy Simmons carded a personal-best 65 (-6) to lead the Davidson golf team to a season-low 285 on day two of the Fighting Irish Classic hosted by Notre Dame.
The three-day/54-hole event is being played on both the Warren Golf Course (Par 71, 7,023 yards) and Lost Dunes Golf Club (Par 71, 6,905 yards) layouts.
In addition to an eagle on the fourth hole, Simmons had five birdies and just one bogey en route to the lowest individual score through two rounds. On day one, Simmons shot 74, but was penalized a total of 14 strokes as a result of not following the lift-clean-and-place rules, which led to an 88.
As a team, Davidson (300-285 = 585) posted the second lowest total Monday to climb into third place, just six shots behind second-place Long Beach State.
Like Simmons, Ralph Blasey (T-26) bounced back with a sub-par score firing a one-under 70, which consisted of four birdies and three bogeys.
Todd Eckstein (147/T-18) and Spencer Papciak (149/T-23) will enter the final day inside the Top-25 following rounds of 74 and 77, respectively.
Juniors David Sargent (151/T-31) and Alex Nianouris (164/T-49) are also competing for the Wildcats this week.
Michigan State (288-284 = 572) will enter the final round with a seven-stroke advantage after an even-par 284.
Cory Sciupider (Notre Dame) and McCormick Clouser (Ball State) lead the 50-player field at four-under 138.
Tomorrow's final round will be played at Warren Golf Course with tee times beginning at 8:30 a.m.
