DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson baseball team began fall practice Monday on Wilson Field.
The 'Cats will practice through the final week of October and have been working out in the weight room and working on individual skills three to four times per week since returning to campus. The Wildcats will also scrimmage High Point on Sunday, Oct. 5.
"We're excited to get back out on the field this fall to begin preparations for our 2015 season," said head coach Dick Cooke, who is beginning his 25th season at the helm of the Wildcats. "The Atlantic 10 will provide us with new challenges, so we are looking to build off of last season's successes while getting the freshmen up to speed."
The 2014 Southern Conference Coach of the Year will be guiding 15 returning letterwinners, which include seven starting position players and two starting pitchers. Four of the seven returning position players earned all-conference honors last season: Ryan Lowe, Lee Miller, David Daniels and Nathan Becker. Eight freshmen have joined the team and will be introduced in the near future on DavidsonWildcats.com.
In recognition of Cooke's 25th season, several alumni will return to Davidson for a celebration Saturday, Sept. 27. There will be an intra-squad scrimmage in the morning.
Davidson is coming off one of its most successful seasons on the diamond, posting a team-record 29 wins in 2014. The 'Cats' also finished with their highest winning percentage (.604) in a season since 1958 (.639, 11-6) and their highest ever in which it played more than 42 games (1987, .595, 25-17).
Davidson finished second in the Southern Conference during the regular season, but will look to make its mark in the Atlantic 10, as 19 of Davidson's 21 sports are beginning competition in the league this season.
The 2015 schedule will also be announced in the near future, as just a few game dates remain to be settled.
