2014 Preseason All-Pioneer Football League Team
ST. LOUIS – Davidson wide receiver William Morris and linebacker Matt Casey were among 28 student-athletes named to the 2014 Preseason All-Pioneer Football League Team, announced Wednesday, and as selected by the league's head coaches.
Returning players who were selected to the league's 2013 All-PFL Teams were placed automatically on the 2014 Preseason All-PFL team in order of voting. Nine preseason selections were first-team honorees last season, 14 earned second-team honors and six were honorable mention picks.
Morris (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) was one of three wide receivers to be recognized, joining San Diego redshirt senior Reggie Bell (65 receptions, 1,050 yards, 9 TDs) and Jacksonville senior Andrew Robustelli (51 receptions, 1,063 yards, 11 TDs), who were both First-Team All-PFL selections in 2013.
Morris was an All-PFL honorable mention during his sophomore campaign last season, as he moved into the starting lineup in the second game of the season and nearly set a school single-season record for receiving yards after finishing with 1,090. The total ranked as the third-most in Davidson history, and he led the PFL and ranked ninth in the country with 99.1 yards per game. Morris also ranked second in the league and 28th nationally with 6.1 receptions per game (67 total) and had five touchdowns. He posted five 100-plus receiving yard games with a career-high 188 yards on seven catches and a touchdown at Johnson C. Smith (Sept. 21), and he made a career-high 11 receptions against Marist. Morris is on pace to become Davidson's all-time leading receiver.
Casey (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) was one of four linebackers named Preseason All-PFL, joining Drake junior John Hugunin (113 tackles, 11 TFL) and Marist redshirt senior Paul Sakowski (62 tackles), who were both first-team All-PFL honorees last season, and Jacksonville redshirt junior Mike Klein (76 tackles), a Second Team All-PFL selection.
The senior enjoyed a breakout season in his first year as a starter, earning a place on the All-Pioneer Football League second team. He made 106 tackles (9.6 per game), which ranks as the fourth-most in a single-season in Davidson history, to lead the team and rank 27th in the nation and fourth in the PFL. Casey also had three stops behind the line, including 2.5 sacks, and made one interception that he returned 17 yards against Marist (Oct. 19). He posted double-digit tackles in four games, making a career-best 13 stops against Lenoir-Rhyne (Sept. 14) and at Dayton (Oct. 5), and 12 tackles at Morehead State (Sept. 28) and vs. Mercer (Nov. 2).
The preseason All-PFL honors are the first for both players, who were also recognized as 2014 USA College Football FCS Preseason All-Americans earlier this month.
The league released its preseason coaches poll, Tuesday, where Davidson was picked 10th and San Diego was tabbed as the title favorite.
The PFL will host its preseason coaches teleconference Thursday starting at 11 a.m. Davidson head coach Paul Nichols is slated for 11:16 a.m.
The Wildcats open the 2014 campaign Saturday, August 30 at 7 p.m. in Richardson Stadium against College of Faith – Charlotte.
