DAVIDSON, N.C. – Richard Fountain and Todd Eckstein of the Davidson golf team have been named Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholars, as announced Wednesday afternoon.
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds and have a stroke-average under 76.0. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
Arguably the most successful golfer in program history, Fountain graduated in May with a 3.22 GPA. On the course, he wrapped up his four-year career with three NCAA Tournament appearances, two individual titles, including the 2009 SoCon Championship, 17 top-10 finishes and 47 career rounds of par or better. In addition, Davidson's only three-time all-conference performer finished as the school's record holder for stroke average, top-fives and top-10s.
Eckstein, who carries a 3.23 GPA as a political science major, finished his junior campaign with a career-low 74.67 stroke average. A native of Durham, he posted seven rounds of par or better, while recording a personal-best third-place finish at the Donald Ross Intercollegiate with a 54-hole total of 203 (67-66-70).
"I am very proud of Richard and Todd for being named Academic All-America scholars," said Davidson head coach Tim Straub. "Their hard work both on the golf course and in the classroom shows their commitment to excellence."
Since 1997, 10 Wildcats have received this honor, including Tim Dillon, Alex Knoll, Steve Mayo and John Skeadas, all of which earned the distinction twice.
