DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's lacrosse team recently picked their team captains for the upcoming 2015 season, as announced by head coach Kim Wayne, and the senior quartet of Emily Rademacher, Emily Cooke, Katy Boyle and Mary Leonard were each tabbed captains.
The foursome return along with 15 other returning letterwinners and will look to lead Davidson into a new era, as it moves to the Atlantic 10 for the 2014-15 season. Rademacher, Cooke and Boyle each started at least 17 of the 'Cats' 19 games a year ago while Leonard was in the starting lineup 11 times in her 17 games played.
The duo of Rademacher and Cooke will look to lead the offense this coming season. They combined for 40 goals and 51 assists for 91 points. Rademacher, a team captain last year, had a breakout junior season that was capped off by earning All-Big South First Team honors. She started all 19 games and finished with a career-high 32 goals to go with nine assists for 41 points. The midfielder also hauled in 27 groundballs and put her name in the Wildcat single-season record book for draw controls with a career-high 68, which was third-most in a season.
Rademacher was also named to the Big South All-Tournament Team and was honored with the team's Just Do It! Award.
Cooke's junior year was a memorable one, as she became the program's all-time assist leader with 105 after dishing out a team-best 42 assists. The attacker earned All-Big South Second Team honors as an alternate. She started 17 of her 19 games played and has 52 career starts out of 55 games. Cooke enters her senior season with totals of 69 goals to go with 105 assists for 174 points, which is good for third place on the all-time list.
Goalie Boyle had a great junior campaign after seeing her first extended action between the pipes for her career. She set a Wildcat single-season record by playing 1,136:40 minutes, while holding the opposition to 9.24 goals against average, which was good for third-best in the record books. Boyle stopped a career-high 126 shots, twice registering a career-best 11 saves in a game. In addition, the rising senior hauled in 29 groundballs and forced four turnovers, both career highs.
A key contributor off the bench, Leonard again was a consistent force for the Wildcats. The midfielder matched her career-high with 16 goals and finished with 18 points. She was one of six Wildcats to score 10 or more goals on the year, pushing her career total to 47 goals.
After matching the school-record for wins a year ago, the Wildcats set a new mark in 2014 by going 12-7 overall behind the strength of a school-best nine-game win streak. They also finished second in their final season in the Big South with a 6-1 mark and made an appearance in the Big South Championship game for the second year in a row. Last year's successful season also saw Wayne become the program's all-time winningest coach with 52 career victories.
