HIGH POINT, N.C. — High Point's Alec Perry scored a career-high six goals, including two during a game-changing run to open the second half, and Davidson was unable to counter in falling for the second year in a row in the Big South Women's Lacrosse Championship game, 11-6, Sunday afternoon at Vert Stadium.
Davidson concludes its outstanding year at 12-7, setting a new program best with its 12 wins. High Point improves to 14-5 and earns the Big South's automatic bid into the NCAA Tournament.
Seniors Paige Logan and Rebecca Garman, along with junior Emily Rademacher were each named to the Big South All-Tournament team. Perry was named the MVP.
With High Point up 5-4 entering the second half, Perry sparked a game-changing 4-0 run to open the half with her fourth and fifth goals of the contest to give the Panthers a 9-5 lead with 22 minutes left. Davidson was never able to recover, scoring just twice in the half in falling for only the second time in the last 13 games to close out the year.
Besides Perry's five scores, HPU had four more players score, including Kendyl Gardner with two goals. MacKenzie Carroll earned two assists to go with a goal.
The duo of Rademacher and Emma Sissman paced Davidson with two goals each, while Erin Doherty and Annie Brockett had a goal apiece. Emily Cooke dished out two assists, while Liz Edwards had one.
The Wildcats started fast in the first six minutes to open the game behind Rademacher. The junior tri-captain drew two free-position attempts and converted on both for a 2-0 lead. She ended the season with a career-high 32 goals.
HPU recovered though after the quick Davidson start, getting a pair of goals from Perry, including a free-position score that put the Panthers up 3-2. Doherty answered right back for the 'Cats, keeping her golden touch alive by scoring her 11th goal during the tournament to tie things up six minutes later at the 13:54 mark. The senior finished her season with 28 goals and 89 for her career.
Davidson's offense then went cold as it had trouble holding onto the ball, coughing it up seven times in a 12-minute stretch. The Panthers took advantage, with Perry striking for her third goal of the half and the Wildcats trailed 5-3 with just 1:39 left in the half.
Davidson shook off its turnover miscues on offense just before halftime to take back some of the momentum when Sissman netted her 49th goal off a pass from behind the net by Cooke to make it 5-4 with six ticks left before halftime.
Helping keep the 'Cats in the half and most of the game was goalie Katy Boyle, who came up with some big saves all game, including numerous point-blank shots. She finished with a career-high tying 11 saves on the day.
The 5-4 score would be as close as the 'Cats would get. The HPU opened up the first eight minutes of the new half with their 4-0 run behind Perry's two goals to start the rally.
Freshman Brockett halted the run with her fifth goal to make it 9-5 at the 19:43 mark. The duo of Sissman and Cooke hooked up again later with 6:56 remaining in the game for the final score of 11-6.
Ann Fucigna, Davidson's all-time leader in goals and points, was held scoreless in her final collegiate game. She concluded her storied career with 261 points and 192 goals.
High Point finished with advantages in shots (28-9), grounballs (18-12) and draw controls (11-8).
GAME NOTES: For the second year a row, the league championship game featured the top two teams in Davidson and High Point … Sissman set the single-season draw control record, finishing with 75 for the season and became the program's all-time leader with 139 in just two years … Davidson fell to 1-6 all-time vs. High Point.
