DAVIDSON, N.C. – Making his third NCAA appearance as an individual, Davidson's Richard Fountain will tee off in the 2014 Raleigh Regional Thursday morning at 10 a.m.
Playing in his hometown, Fountain will be paired with Rafael Abad (Bethune-Cookman) and Eric Brady (East Carolina) for the opening round.
The 54-hole event is being played on N.C. State's Lonnie Poole Golf Course May 15-17.
Fountain joins Mike Spann (1967-69) as the only Wildcats to participate and make three NCAA Tournament appearances. The only three-time all-conference selection in school history, Fountain has a 73.32 stroke average, 11 Top-5 and 17 Top-10 finishes for his career.
This season, Fountain has a personal-best 72.24 stroke average, while finishing in the Top-10 five times.
In addition to earning an automatic selection in 2011 after winning the Southern Conference Championship as a freshman, Fountain captured the Mizuno Savannah Intercollegiate individual title in just his third collegiate start.
After becoming the first Wildcat to earn an NCAA selection in 38 years, Fountain finished tied for 35th with a 54-hole total of 226 (+10) three years ago at The Pete Dye River Course of Virginia Tech. Prior to his final round 81, he was tied for fourth entering the last day of competition.
Last year at the Tallahassee Regional, Fountain posted a 54-hole total of 211 (-5) to finish tied for 17th out of 75 competitors.
The NCAA Division I Men's Golf Regional is a preliminary round of the NCAA Division I Men's Championship. The Raleigh Regional will consist of a 54-hole tournament with 13 teams and 10 individual players. The low five teams and low individual not included on those five teams will advance to the NCAA Championship that runs May 23-28 at Prairie Dunes Country Club in Hutchinson, Kan.
