DAVIDSON, N.C. — Freshman Katherine Rueger was awarded for her solid regular season by being named one of five Big South award winners, garnering freshman of the year honors with the release of the league's all-conference teams today, as announced by the Big South office.
Rueger was one of six Wildcats to earn all-league honors as she was also named to the Big South Second Team at the midfielder spot, joining attacker Ann Fucigna and Emily Cooke, who was one of three alternates on the team. Earning a spot on the first team was attacker Emma Sissman, midfielder Emily Rademacher – her second straight year on the team – and defender Paige Logan, who was also named to the Big South All-Academic Team.
"I'm extremely proud of Katherine for her accomplishments this spring," said head coach Kim Wayne, who collected her 50th career win with a victory at Longwood, April 25. "She stepped up when we needed someone to step up and never backed away just because she's a freshman. She is a true example of what it means to fight and put the team on your back when it's needed the most. She has come a long way since the start of our fall season and I'm excited to see where the next three years will take her."
The six Wildcats helped Davidson to another successful regular season, going 10-6 overall and 6-1 in the Big South to finish second. The 10 wins marked the third time in program history Davidson has reached that mark and second straight year. The 'Cats rattled off a school-best nine-game win streak during the regular season and had a 13-game Big South win streak dating back to last year, which both were snapped in the regular-season finale at High Point.
The freshman Rueger was one of the top first-year players in the league. Twice she was named the Big South Crons Brand Rookie of the Week. Rueger ranks fourth on the team with 18 goals, while dishing out five assists for 23 points. The Cold Spring Harbor, N.Y. native, scored a season-best four goals in her third collegiate game, dishing out two assists for a season-high six points during Davidson's 22-4 win at Kennesaw State.
The midfielder has played in 15 of the 'Cats' 16 games and started seven of those contests. Rueger also has collected 18 groundballs and pulled in five draw controls.
The quartet of Fucigna, Cooke, Rademacher and Sissman have been the heart of the Wildcat scoring attack this year. Fucigna, already one of the program's all-time best players, continues to add to her program-leading goals and points totals. The senior, who was twice named offensive player of the week during the regular season, has a team-high 55 points to push her career total to 252, while her 34 goals are second-most on the team and gives her 187 for her career. Fucigna's 21 assists are two away from matching her career high set in 2012 and puts her third all-time in the program with 65.
An All-Big South First Team pick in 2013, Fucigna has registered 11 multi-goal games this year to push her career total to 55. During Davidson's nine-game win streak, the senior attacker tallied 43 of her 55 points on 27 goals and 16 assists.
Sissman has formed a nice one-two scoring punch with Fucigna. The sophomore, coming off a solid 28-goal, 34-point outing in 2013, has one-upped those numbers. She paces the team with 43 goals, a Big South-high five of them for game-winners, and is third with 44 points as she has started all 16 games. Sissman has recorded two or more goals in a game 11 times, including netting a career-high eight goals in a road win at Presbyterian, April 13. During the Wildcats' win streak, she registered 30 of her 43 goals.
In addition to her offensive numbers, the midfielder is second on the team with 56 draw controls to push her career total to 120, second-best in the Wildcat record books in just two seasons.
One of the Wildcats' best all-around players is Rademacher, who is one of six 'Cats to start all 16 games. The junior tri-captain has registered 18 goals and five assists for 23 points, while pulling in 21 groundballs and a career-high 61 draw controls. She is just eight away from matching the single-season record of 69 draw controls set by Erin Doherty in 2012. Rademacher is also tops on the team with a 12-for-16 showing on free-position attempts.
Helping all three find the back of the net this year has been Cooke, who was the Big South Offensive Player of the Year last season. The junior, who set the program's all-time assist mark this year, paces the team with 37 helpers to go with eight goals for 45 points. For her career, Cooke has 100 assists and 168 points, putting her fourth all-time.
Leading the defensive side of the field was tri-captain Logan. The senior, who has started all 70 of her career games, leads the team with 33 groundballs and 16 caused turnovers. Named to the Big South Second Team in 2013, Logan is third on the team with 21 draw controls. Overall, she ranks in the Wildcat top-10 in all three categories with career numbers of 124 groundballs, 87 draw controls and 55 caused turnovers.
High Point, the regular season champion, swept the other four big awards. Mackenize Carroll was the league's offensive player of the year, Jasmine Jordan was the defensive player of the year and head coach Lyndsey Boswell was the coach of the year. Jordan was also named the Big South Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
Davidson opens the Big South Tournament this Wednesday night, April 30, at 6 p.m. when it hosts seventh-seeded Liberty in a quarterfinal game. Should the Wildcats advance, they would face the winner of Longwood/Campbell Friday in the semis at 7 p.m. on the campus of High Point. The championship game is set for 2 p.m. Sunday, May 4, on ESPN3.
