SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Davidson senior right-hander Danny Mooney was named the Southern Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week for April 21-27 after throwing a complete-game shutout against Appalachian State Saturday, it was announced Monday afternoon by the league office.
Mooney (4-3) went the distance for the second time this season, yielding just three hits and two walks while striking out six for his first career shutout, as Davidson defeated Appalachian State, 12-0. Mooney was perfect the first time through the Mountaineers' order and took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before allowing a two-out single.
His first career complete game came earlier this season against The Citadel (Mar. 15), but an unearned run in the eighth inning spoiled the shutout.
The Richmond, Va., native lowered his ERA to 2.26 with Saturday's performance, and now ranks second in the SoCon and first among starters in the category. Batters are hitting a league-low .179 against him.
It is Mooney's first SoCon Pitcher of the Week honor, and the first for Davidson since fellow righty Nick Neitzel earned the honor during the final week of the 2013 season. Centerfielder Forrest Brandt owns the only other SoCon weekly honor this season, earning player of the week honors on Mar. 10.
Halfway through an eight-game road stretch, Davidson (25-14, 15-4 SoCon) is scheduled to next play at Winthrop Tuesday at 5 p.m., and will open a three-game SoCon series at Elon Friday at 7 p.m.
