SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Grayam Sailor-Tynes posted Davidson's top finish of the day, while Andrew Lantz turned in the top preliminary performance, on the first day of competition at the 2014 Southern Conference Men's Outdoor Track and Field Championship Saturday, hosted by Wofford College at Spartanburg High School.
As team, Davidson is tied for seventh place with five points. Samford currently leads with 45 points.
Sailor-Tynes placed fifth in the 3,000-meter steeplechase nearing a personal best time by finishing in 9 minutes, 21.69 seconds, which ranked as a Davidson all-time top-10 performance in the event.
Lantz led a strong Davidson performance in the 800-meter run prelims, as he placed second in 1:52.59. Patrick Rollo was not far behind, placing sixth in a personal best 1:53.39 to also advance to the finals Sunday. The 'Cats also performed well in the other middle-distance preliminaries, as Walker Mogen qualified with a fifth-place performance in 3:58.69, while Will McDuffie was the 12th and final qualifier, crossing the line in 4:02.84.
Charles Rappe qualified for the finals in both hurdles prelims. His 110-meter time of 15.43 seconds ranked him fourth, while his 400-meter time of 58.70 was good enough for the eighth and final qualifying berth.
Xzavier Killings earned the only other point on the day in the long jump, placing eighth with a top leap of 22 feet, ¼ inch (6.71m).
Wildcats finished just outside the scoring in other events. Michael Lorentsen took ninth in the pole vault, clearing 14 feet, 5 ¼ inches, while Jonathan Campbell was ninth in the javelin with a top throw of 155 feet, 7 inches (47.42m). Whitner Chase took 10th in the 10,000 meter run in 31:58.79.
Nate Faubion led Davidson in the 400-meter dash, but did not advance to the finals after placing 10th in 50.02 seconds. Stewart Dalton also came up just short in the 100-meter dash prelims, finishing 11th in 11.12 seconds.
Competition will continue Sunday.
