Fountain Climbs SoCon Leaderboard; Wildcats 11 off the Pace

PINEHURST, N.C. – Senior Richard Fountain carded a four-under 68 to climb into a tie for fourth following the second round of the 2014 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship Monday.
The three-day 54-hole event is being played on Jack Nicklaus' Par 72, 7,144-yard National Golf Club layout.
Despite bettering yesterday's opening round by a stroke, first-round co-leader Davidson (294-293 =587) fell to fifth place in the team standings, but is just 11 strokes out of the lead, currently held by Western Carolina (294-282 = 576).
Nationally-ranked Georgia Southern (296-284 = 580) is four back of the Catamounts in second place, while Chattanooga (297-284 = 581) and UNCG (300-285 =585) sit third and fourth, respectively, entering the final day.
Fountain, who entered the second round tied for 15th following an opening three-over 75, got off to a fast start birding two of his first three holes. The 2011 SoCon Individual Champion finished the day with five birdies and just one bogey to lead the Wildcats.
After starting the day in second place, sophomore David Sargent (70-75 = 145) turned in a three-over 75 and is just two strokes behind his teammate in a tie for ninth place.
Todd Eckstein, who finished tied for second last year (77-73 = 150), signed for a one-over 73 and moved into a tie for 20th, while Samuel Echikson (149/T17th) and Ralph Blasey (154/T33rd) each shot 77 today.
Ranked 13th nationally, Western Carolina's J.T. Poston (-10) carded a tournament-low 66 to extend his individual lead to eight shots over UNCG's Roy Dixon (-2) and Carter Jenkins (-2).
In the third and final round, the Wildcats will be paired with UNCG and Furman with tee times beginning at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.
