PINEHURST, N.C. – Paced by sophomore David Sargent's two-under 70, Davidson is tied atop the team leaderboard with Western Carolina following day one of the 2014 Southern Conference Men's Golf Championship Sunday.
The three-day 54-hole event is being played on Jack Nicklaus' Par 72, 7,144-yard National Golf Club layout.
After getting to three-under as a team late in the day, the Wildcats gave some shots back down the stretch to finish at 294 (+6). Davidson, which held the outright lead following day one a year ago, finished the afternoon with 16 birdies as a team.
Furman and nationally-ranked Georgia Southern are two back tied for third, while Chattanooga, the defending champs, are three off the pace in fifth place.
Sargent, who carded just one of four sub-par rounds on the day, is currently second on the individual leaderboard, two behind the Catamount's and 13th ranked J.P. Poston.
Senior Samuel Echikson led the Wildcats with five birdies, but also suffered five bogeys and will begin the second round in a tie for fifth at even par.
Davidson's Richard Fountain posted a three-over 75, while Todd Eckstein and Ralph Blasey are tied for 27th out of 50 competitors after carding rounds of five-over 77.
In round two, the Wildcats will be paired with Western Carolina and Furman with tee times beginning at 10:30 a.m. Monday morning.
Live scoring will be available each day at www.golfstat.com.
