DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson men's and women's tennis teams gear up for their final go-around in the Southern Conference Tournament starting Wednesday, April 16, before they move to the Atlantic 10 next year.
The Wildcat men (5-17, 2-7 SoCon), seeded eighth, will be seeking the program's 10th tournament title, and first since 1973, while the Wildcat women (7-17, 2-7 SoCon) are looking for their first title. The women are also seeded eighth this year for the tournament.
The men will matchup in the first round against ninth-seeded and host Chattanooga (6-13, 1-8 Socon) Wednesday morning at 11 a.m. The Mocs closed out the regular season losing their last three matches, two of them on their home court.
Should the 'Cats advance, top-seeded No. 54 Elon (16-4, 9-0 SoCon) awaits them in the next round Thursday, Apr. 17, with match time set for 8:30 a.m. The Phoenix won 12 of their last 13 matches to end the regular season, which included taking a 6-1 home win vs. Davidson.
The women will open tournament play vs. ninth-seeded Wofford (5-15, 1-8 SoCon) Thursday as well, with match time set for 3 p.m. The Terriers lost their last 11 straight matches to finish out the regular season, which started with a 5-2 setback to the Wildcats at home.
If the women advance, they would take on the top seed in the Furman Paladins (16-5, 9-0 SoCon) Thursday at 1:00 p.m. Furman, ranked No. 61 and riding a nine-match win streak, defeated Davidson 5-2 for its 18th overall regular season SoCon title. It was the Paladins' first since 2009.

The All-Time Series/Last Meeting
The men's all-time series vs. Chattanooga is 12-11 in favor of the Wildcats since 1988. In this year's meeting, after dropping the doubles point Davidson charged back to take five of the six singles matches to net a 5-2 road win, March 23. The trio of Connor Evins, J.B. Gough and Evan Watkins sealed up the win with three-set victories at No. 2, 4 and 6 singles.
For the women, they are 22-1 vs. the Wofford Terriers. Davidson captured a 5-2 road win in this year's regular season meeting, March 9. Jenna Brunner won her fifth match in a row at the time with a three-set victory at No. 5. Also winning was Brites Moniz-Soares, Sarah Stein and Tamara Hill in singles action.
SoCon Tournament History
Davidson men are 12-14 since 1988 in the tournament. Last year, the 'Cats went 1-1 as they netted a first-round win vs. Wofford, 4-1, before falling to Samford in the quarterfinals, 4-1. They last faced Chattanooga in the tournament in 2012, falling 4-3.
The Wildcat women are 17-15 in the tournament since 1993, the first year Davidson was part of the SoCon. In three of the past nine league tournaments, they have reached the finals, facing Furman each time.
Last year the women's season ended in the first round when they dropped a 4-1 match to Samford. The Wildcats last faced Wofford in the tournament in 2008, opening with a 4-0 win on their way to the championship match. They are 5-0 all-time in the tournament vs. the Terriers.
Scouting the Wildcat Men- Quick Hits
• Davidson enters the tournament having lost four of its last five matches to close out the regular season.
• Davidson went 2-7 at home and 3-8 on the road, with an 0-2 record in neutral site matches.
• The 'Cats won 41 combined singles matches, collecting 20 of those wins in SoCon play.
• Connor Evins leads the way with a 9-13 singles record, including a 4-3 mark at No. 3.
• Evins had a team-best four-match win streak during the season and has won 30 career singles wins overall.
• Ethan Kallick finished second with an 8-11 overall singles record (6-7 at No. 3) and had a team-best 5-4 mark in SoCon matches.
• Kallick went 5-5 in his last 10 matches.
• Davidson collected 20 doubles wins, going 20-39 overall and 8-19 vs. SoCon foes.
• The Wildcats used 15 different doubles combinations throughout the season, with Alex Howard and Ricky Saad having the best winning percentage.
• Evins and Howard each had seven doubles wins apiece to pace the team.
• Davidson used four freshmen in the rotation this year with J.B. Gough (7-10, 4-5 SoCon) and Ricky Saad (3-6, 2-3 SoCon) seeing the most action in singles play.
• Head coach Drew Barrett is in his eighth season and collected 70 wins at Davidson. He has 109 for his career.
Scouting the Wildcat Women- Quick Hits
• Davidson finished with a 1-4 record in its last five regular season matches, getting its lone win on a 5-2 decision at home vs. Western Carolina.
• The 'Cats earned 55 singles wins as a team, going 55-87 with an 18-36 record in league matches.
• The No. 1, 2 and 5 singles positions each collected over 10 wins apiece.
• Brites Moniz-Soares was named to the 2014 All-SoCon First Team, her second career all-league honor after earning a spot on the second team in 2012. She becomes the 13th Wildcat in program history to earn first team honors, and the first since Virginia Berry in 2010.
• Moniz-Soares had a strong senior season, going a team-best 13-10 as the Wildcats' top singles player.
• She was also 5-4 in league matches and finished 6-4 in her final 10 matches overall.
• Moniz-Soares has 43 career singles wins, getting 16 of them in SoCon matches.
• Fellow senior Nisha Crouser has won 28 career singles matches after going 8-15 this year.
• Freshman Jenna Brunner and sophomore Elaina Cummer each hit the 10-win mark, going 11-10 and 10-14, respectively.
• Cummer, a SoCon All-Freshman Team member last year, collected all 10 of her wins at No. 2 singles.
• Davidson collected 21 doubles wins throughout the regular season, getting eight of them in SoCon action.
• The Wildcats' No. 1 doubles team of Moniz-Soares and Cummer went a team-best 11-10 overall and 5-4 in SoCon play.
• Their 11 wins were most in the league at the No. 1 spot.
• Head coach Caroline Price is in her 32nd year, having collected 422 career wins at Davidson. She is a three-time SoCon Coach of the Year, with the last one coming in 2002.
