Wildcats Off to Fast Start at Opening Outdoor Meet

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Several Wildcats posted personal best marks and yet another school record fell as the Davidson women's track & field team kicked off the outdoor season at the annual Charlotte 49er Classic, held at the Irwin Belk Track on the campus of UNC Charlotte.
On the second day of action, Hannah Rieden and Ashlyn Gruber both set new personal records in the 800-meter run, with Rieden narrowly missing the program record. She took sixth place in the event with a 2:13.49, just missing the school mark of 2:13.17. Gruber placed 19th, also posting a career-best of 2:17.43 with Brigid Behrens finishing just ahead of her in 18th after crossing the line in 2:17.24.
Also in the 800m were Grace Watt and Olivia Menden. Watt claimed 33rd place in a time of 2:20.54, while Menden was 42nd in 2:22.22.
On Friday, Sarah Paddon claimed first place in the 1,500-meter run, finishing in a time of 4:28.69. Paddon, who set a new Davidson mark in the mile this winter, broke the Wildcats' record in the event by nine seconds.
A number of 'Cats joined Paddon in the event, including Erin Osment who took 43rd in 4:57.56. Maggie Rickard was 60th in the race, crossing the finish line in 5:03.18 while Rachel McKay rounded the track in 5:08.84 to take 65th.
Brigid Behrens was one of several 'Cats with a personal record on the day. She took 26th in the 400-meter run, clocking at 58.41. Hannah Rieden made her outdoor debut, claiming 41st in the event in a time of 59.92, while Ashlyn Gruber crossed the line in 1:00.71 for a 48th-place finish. Grace Watt ran a 1:01.50 for 53rd place.
Ali Cobb and Hayden Bates set new personal records in the 5,000-meter run. Cobb ran an 18:27.32 for 27th place, while Bates took 29th after finishing the race in 18:32.21. Jenny Fritz joined the duo in the event, clocking in at 19:14.69 for 42nd place while Lauren Carter grabbed 50th with a time of 20:04.13.
Also with a personal best was Kate Kostecky, who posted a top-15 finish in the 400-meter hurdles. She finished in a time of 1:07.18 for 15th place in the event.
Morgan McGrath ran a 29.02 in the 200-meter dash, finishing in 115th in a large field of competitors. In the field events, Molly Marshall tied for 19th in the pole vault, clearing a height of 3.05 meters.
Davidson will head to Raleigh, N.C., for the Raleigh Relays March 28.
