OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. – Struggling to gain momentum, Davidson's Kevin Birmingham couldn't overcome West Virginia's Mike Morales, dropping an 8-2 contest to wrap up competition in the pigtail consolations Thursday evening at Chesapeake Energy Arena.
Birmingham, who previously lost a 9-6 decision to Morales in Morgantown earlier this season, fought tough battle to put points on the board. Morales scored a takedown just over a minute into the match, holding on for riding time through the end of the first period. Starting in the defensive position, Birmingham picked up a point with an escape midway through the second. However, Morales took him down with 10 seconds remaining in the second to lead 4-1.
With Morales on the bottom to start the final period, Birmingham held on to cut into the riding time before the Mountaineer escaped midway through the period. The two battled for position, as Morales scored on another takedown with 30 seconds remaining. Birmingham escaped, fighting to gain control of the bout. In the end he ran out of time, as Morales picked up a point for riding time to take the match by an 8-2 decision.
Scott Patrick will wrestle later this evening in a second-round consolation bout. Check back with www.davidsonwildcats.com for the start time and mat number.
