DMR Sets Record on Day One of SoCon Meet

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – The distance medley relay set a new school record and a pair of Wildcats qualified for tomorrow's finals as the Davidson women's track & field team completed day one of 2014 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at the JDL Fast Track Saturday afternoon.
Davidson is ninth overall with five points through six scored events. Western Carolina sits atop the leaderboard with 49.5 points, followed by runner-up Samford with 43 points. Appalachian State rounds out the top three with a score of 40.5.
Ashlyn Gruber, Brigid Behrens, Grace Watt and Hannah Rieden set a new program mark in a time of 12:14.60 in the DMR. The quartet combined for a fourth-place finish in the event.
Behrens also had a successful outing in the 800-meter run, qualifying for the final heat. She took eighth in the preliminaries in a time of 2:18.01. Olivia Menden was 11th in the prelims, narrowly missing the cut with a time of 2:20.46. Kate Kostecky took 13th in 2:21.01 while Rachel McKay was 17th in 2:28.58.
Claiming the third-best overall time in the prelims, Sarah Paddon will run the mile in tomorrow's finals. She finished in 5:07.68. Maggie Rickard also competed in the preliminaries, taking 19th after crossing the line in 5:31.39.
Morgan McGrath ran a 1:04.35 in the 400-meter run, taking 22nd in the event. Hayden Bates and Caroline Turner posted back-to-back finishes in the 3,000-meter run, taking 12th and 13th, respectively. Bates crossed the finish line in 10:49.36 while Turner ran an 11:13.04.
The 'Cats will return to action Sunday morning. The meet is slated to wrap up with an awards ceremony at 4:40 p.m.
