DMR, Chase Lead Wildcats During First Day of SoCons

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – A near-record distance medley relay performance led the Davidson men's track and field team on the first day of competition at the 2014 Southern Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships Saturday on the JDL Fast Track.
As a team, the Wildcats sit sixth with 11 points with one day of competition remaining.
Senior Andrew Lantz returned from injury to leadoff the DMR effort, as the 'Cats placed third in 10 minutes, 10.55 seconds, nearing the recent record of 10.10.08 set at the same facility last year. Junior Nate Faubion, sophomore Will McDuffie and freshman Walker Mogen ran the remaining legs.
Senior #Whitner Chase3 barely missed the podium in the 3000-meter run, earning a place on Davidson's all-time top-10 performers list in the event in 8:30.35.
Davidson also had some strong preliminary results, led by sophomore Charles Rappe, who ranks second in the 60-meter hurdles with a personal-best 8.58 seconds. Sophomore Patrick Rollo and junior Wesley Laytham ranked consecutively in the 800-meter run prelims in fourth (1:55.55) and fifth (1:55.23), respectively. Rollo ranks ahead of Laytham by virtue of winning the fourth heat.
Junior Sal de Giudice (4:27.11) and senior Grayam Sailor-Tynes (4:27.19) also advanced in the mile run, placing eighth and ninth, respectively.
Additionally, senior Michael Lorentsen came up just short of scoring in the pole vault, placing ninth after clearing 14 feet, 05.25 inches.
Appalachian State's men's team leads the field at the conclusion of day one, after piling up 60 points to lead Samford by nine points. Western Carolina sits at third with 43 points.
Sunday's events begin at 9:15 a.m. with the completion of the men's heptathlon.
