SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Seven wins and six pins in the month of January has earned Davidson wrestler Kevin Birmingham SoCon Wrestler of the Month accolades, as announced by the league office Friday afternoon.
Birmingham compiled a 7-1 overall mark through the first month of 2014, with six of his wins coming by fall. The 149-pounder downed a pair of ranked opponents, pinned No. 24 Justin Arthur of Clarion and No. 27 Matt Frisch of the Citadel. The Sicklerville, N.J. native opened the month by sending Ohio Northern's Steven Feucht to the mat in just 47 seconds to lead the Wildcats to a 23-17 win on January 8.
That pin would prove to be the first of five straight, who went on to stick Arthur, No. 13 Pittsburgh's Jake Keller and Seton Hill's Kevin Laubauch at the Pitt Duals Jan. 12. He then turned his focus to Southern Conference action, pinning Gardner-Webb's Tyler Ziegler. His pin streak came to an end though his winning streak did not as he topped VMI's Shabaka Johns in a 9-7 sudden victory on Jan. 24. Birmingham's lone setback of the month came Jan. 26 when he dropped an 8-7 decision to No. 10 Richard Durso of Franklin & Marshall, though he would pin Frisch the same day.
Birmingham and the Wildcats will take on West Virginia University in Morgantown, W.Va., Friday evening in a 7:30 p.m. dual.
