DAVIDSON, N.C. – Second-time honorees Bryant Bednarek and Colin Merrill, and first-time honoree Josh Daryoush will represent Davidson on the Capital One Academic All-District III Division I Football Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced Thursday.
As first team selections, all three are eligible for consideration for the Capital One Academic All-America team. Bednarek and Merrill, both senior defensive backs from Ohio, were named Academic All-District last season and become the eighth and ninth Wildcat football players to earn the honor twice.
Fellow Pioneer Football League member Campbell led District III, which is comprised of all Division I (FBS and FCS) programs in North Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia, with four selections, while Davidson tied for second with Wake Forest with three. It is Davidson's largest representation since 2011 when four 'Cats were elected to the team.
Bednarek, a Westerville native and economics major, has been a starter since his freshman season and has started the last 29 consecutive games at safety for the Wildcats. He is also a senior representative on the team's honor committee. This season, he leads the team with 5.5 tackles for loss and two interceptions, while ranking third with 44 tackles.
Merrill, a Circleville native and biology major, has excelled as a starter for Davidson the past two seasons at cornerback. He leads the 'Cats so far this season with three pass breakups, and also has an interception and 39 tackles (fifth on the team). He has played in all but three games in his career.
Daryoush, a Bethesda, Md., native pursuing a pre-medicine track, is a crucial member of Davidson's offensive line who has made a successful transition from guard to tackle this season. Slipping through holes created in part by Daryoush, the 'Cats are averaging 158.4 yards per game rushing – their most since 1999 – after averaging just 88.2 last season. Daryoush, a junior, has played in all but one contest in his career, and has started all but one of the games he has played.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 18,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
Davidson will host Jacksonville in its home finale Saturday at 1 p.m. in Richardson Stadium.
