PITTSBURGH, Pa. – Buoyed by experience in its first Atlantic 10 championship, the Davidson men's cross country team used a strong showing to earn a fifth-place finish, out of 14 teams, Saturday at Schenley Park.
"This was a great day for Davidson cross country," said Jen Straub, director of cross country and track and field. "I'm really proud of how both our men and women competed."
George Mason secured its first team title in program-history, totaling 50 points as the Patriots place three runners in the top-five. Duquesne took second with 64 total points, followed by St. Joseph's with 100 points. Davidson took fifth-place with 144 behind Saint Louis's 119 points. St. Joseph senior Rad Gunzenhauser took the men's crown by a seven-second margin.
"The team ran well. It was a great start for us in the A-10," said associate head coach Renny Waldron. "To finish fifth, after being picked to finish eighth is the preseason poll is a positive outcome. We hope to improve every year in the conference. It was good for our younger guys to experience their first championship."
Junior Daniel Samet led the way for the men's squad. Samets' time of 24:55.7 was good for 12th overall, and was just three tenths of a second out of a top-10 finish on the 8-kilometer course. Samet was named to the all-conference team after the race.
"We're especially proud of Daniel Samet who really gutted it out and ran a great race and earned a spot on the all-conference team," added Waldron.
Senior Whitner Chase crossed the line in 20th position with a time of 25:24.2. Sophomore Walker Mogen had a strong run, riding the heels of Chase to a 28th-place finish and 25:32.3 time. Davidson didn't have to wait long for its next runner as Ryan Phillips crossed the line in 34th place, covering the course in 25:37.0. Senior Sal Del Giudice was the final Davidson scorer across the line. Del Giudice, who narrowly missed breaking the 25-minute mark, posted a time of 26:01.1, good for 50th overall in the competition.
Davidson will have a week layoff before returning to action Nov. 14 in Louisville, Ky., for NCAA regionals.
