DAVIDSON, N.C. – A second half flurry of scoring chances came up short for the Davidson field hockey team as Lock Haven was able to fend off the resilient Wildcats, 2-1, Saturday afternoon at Belk Turf Field.
Davidson (2-11, 1-3 A-10) was edged 16-13 in shots and 13-10 in penalty corners. Emily Leytham steered away seven shots in the setback, while Lock Haven's (8-5, 3-1 A-10) Elaina White made nine stops.
Nakira Downes opened the scoring for Lock Haven in the 25th minute. The junior pulled Leytham out of position and buried the ball far side to give the Lady Eagles a 1-0 advantage.
Davidson had the chance to even the score with less than four minutes to play in the half. The Wildcats were awarded three consecutive penalty corners that resulted in shots, but White turned away three to keep a one goal advantage at intermission.
The Lady Eagles were able to halt the Wildcat's offensive efforts early in the second frame as Hannah Fisher fired three consecutive shots on goal, but couldn't get past White.
Lock Haven padded its lead midway through the second half when Steph Ebersole launched a blast off a penalty corner to the left side of the goal and pass Leytham.
Davidson retaliated less than 10 minutes later as Melissa Funsten buried her second goal of the season. After four straight penalty corners that resulted in shots, the Wildcats capitalized on their fifth. Anna Brewer inserted the ball to Anna Davis at the top of the circle who set up Funsten. The junior sent a shot to left side of the cage to cut the deficit to one.
Davidson had eight shots, seven of which were on target, and six penalty corners in the second frame, but it wasn't enough as Lock Haven picked up its third conference win.
Davidson is on the road, visiting Longwood on Monday, Oct. 13 at 3 p.m.
