DAVIDSON, N.C. – Coming off a regular-season Big South title last year in their first season in the league, the Davidson women's lacrosse team was picked to finish second in the 2014 league's preseason poll by the head coaches, as announced today by the league office.
High Point, which won the inaugural Big South Tournament Title a year ago, was voted as the preseason favorite for the second in a row. The Panthers received all but one first-place vote for 63 of the possible 64 total points.
The Wildcats received the other first-place vote to go with seven second-place votes for 57 points. This will be the final year the 'Cats are in the league as they move to the Atlantic-10 for the 2014-15 campaign.
Davidson finished with an 11-7 record (7-0 Big South) in 2013 to tie the school mark set in 2008 for most wins in a season. On its way to the 11 wins, the Wildcats rattled off a program-best seven-game win streak and tied the 2008 record for most home wins in a season with eight.
Returning is 18 letterwinners, including six starters. Leading the way is reigning Big South Offensive Player of the Year Emily Cooke and All-Big South First Team pick Ann Fucigna. The junior Cooke had a record-setting second year, finishing with 32 goals and 55 assists for 87 points. She set the single-season record for assists and points, which both ranked first in the Big South.
Fucigna looks to cap off an outstanding career in her final season. She was just as good as Cooke a year ago, tallying 53 goals and 63 points, becoming the program's all-time leader in goals (153) and points (197).
The championship tournament is slated for April 30-May 4, with quarterfinal games at the home sites of the top-four seeds, April 30, followed by the semifinals (May 2) and final (May 4) at the No. 1 seed. All eight teams will qualify for the tournament for the first time, with the champion receiving the Big South's automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
Davidson opens its season at home in Richardson Stadium against San Diego State, Feb. 16, at 1 p.m.
