Fountain and Echikson Lead Golf at Fightin Irish Gridiron Golf Classic

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – Seniors Richard Fountain and Sam Echikson are tied for 11th just four strokes off the lead as the Davidson men's golf team sits in seventh place following day one of the 2013 Fightin Irish Gridiron Golf Classic.
The 54-hole event is being played on the 7,023-yard, Par 71 Warren Golf Club layout.
As a team, the Wildcats fired a 293 on their morning 18 before carding a 294 in round two. Davidson is only two back of host Notre Dame and just nine swings out of third place, currently occupied by Michigan State (578).
Fountain (+1) recorded rounds of 72 and 71, while Echikson (+1) backed his opening one-under 70 with a 73 in the afternoon. The Wildcat duo is within striking distance of the lead, which is held by Yale's Will Davenport (-3).
Also competing for the Wildcats are Andy Simmons (+8/T41st), Ralph Blasey (+11/T55) and Todd Eckstein (+12/T64th).
Houston (282-283 = 565) recorded consecutive sub-par rounds and holds the top spot on the team leaderboard by 10 shots over second-place Georgia Southern (575).
College of Charleston, Eastern Michigan, Georgetown, Southern Mississippi, UT-Arlington, West Florida and Xavier are also participating in the event.
Tomorrow's final round will begin at 8:30 a.m.
