SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Valeriy Sviderskiy's fourth goal in as many contests wasn't enough as Davidson suffered a 2-1 setback to Wofford in both team's Southern Conference men's soccer opener Saturday evening at Snyder Field.

The loss drops the Wildcats to 4-2-1 overall and 0-1-0 in league play, while the Terriers improve to 4-3-1 and 1-0-0.

After a four-hour delay and scoreless opening period, Wofford struck twice early in the second half to grab a 2-0 lead.

"Credit to Wofford, which scored two good goals and reacted better than us to the delay and driving rain," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear.

Will Puckett put the Terriers on the board in the 51st minute with a deflected blast from about 25 yards out, while Matthew Aurednik netted the eventual game-winner less than five minutes later.

"The positive was we did not concede a goal on a set piece which is Wofford's strength."

"The negatives are that they outworked us and we talked a lot about the crucial need for conviction, toughness and quality for 90 minutes," said Spear. "It took us too long to embrace the intensity, focus and sharpness needed to earn a conference road win. It is just one game, but a key learning experience."

Coming off a two-goal performance Tuesday against Duke, Sviderskiy made it a one-goal game at the 58:44 mark, but that's as close as the 'Cats would get. Max Pragnell's team-leading fifth assist set up the sophomore's fourth strike of the season.

"We finally hit our rhythm midway through the second half and it seemed an equalizer would come."

In the 80th minute, Chris Pettiglio had an opportunity to even the score, but was unable to capitalize.

Despite the loss, Andrew Kenneson stopped a game-high six shots for the Wildcats.

Davidson will resume its challenging non-conference slate with a 7 p.m. contest at N.C. State Tuesday evening.
