RADFORD, Va. – The Davidson field hockey team battled a 0-0 tie into overtime but couldn't find the back of the net as they dropped a 1-0 NorPac contest to the Radford Highlanders at the RU Hockey Field on Friday evening.
Emily Leytham had solid outing in her first career start in goal, coming up with four saves and holding the Highlanders scoreless for over 71 minutes. Her Radford counterpart Sidney Encarnacion had seven saves in recording the shutout.
The Wildcats outshot the Highlanders 19-10 but did not record a shot in overtime. Melissa Funsten and Anna Davis led the effort with seven and six shots, respectively. Three of Davis's shots came on goal, as did a pair of Funsten's attempts. Katherine English, Becca Jones and Tyler McFayden each recorded a pair of shots as well.
Davidson also finished the evening with a clear advantage on penalty corners at 13-8.
Despite four penalty corners in the first 15 minutes of action, Davidson couldn't put a shot past Encarnacion. Funsten got off three attempts in that time frame, but couldn't find the back of the net. Davis had a pair of shots blocked later in the half before taking a pair of penalty corners to close out the first 35 minutes of play as the teams took a 0-0 tie into half time.
Funsten hit a post on a strong shot to start the second half as the 'Cats had three early attempts but again failed to score. Each team took a penalty corner near the end of regulation, but neither got on the board as the game was sent to overtime.
The Highlanders were awarded a penalty corner less than a minute into the extra period. Stacey Mackintosh got a shot off the corner, hitting the post. Her rebound was scooped up and sent past Leytham by Alayna Versage as Radford took the 1-0 triumph.
The Wildcats (3-4, 0-2) will remain in Virginia, heading over to Williamsburg for a Sunday match up at the College of William & Mary. The 'Cats and the Tribe will square off at noon.
