WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – Despite a 10-save effort by goalkeeper Emily Leytham, the Davidson field hockey team couldn't muster up enough offense to get by William & Mary as the Tribe took a 1-0 win from the Wildcats at Busch Field Sunday afternoon.
Leytham was again stellar in the cage in her second career game, having given up just a pair of goals in two games this weekend. Her Tribe counterpart Cate Johnson came up with four saves on all four Wildcat attempts to record the shutout.
Melissa Funsten continues to lead the Davidson (3-4, 0-2) offense and recorded a team-high three shots, all of which came on goal. Katherine English and Anna Davis each had an attempt as well as the Wildcats were outshot 17-5 by the Tribe.
Taylor Hodge led William & Mary with four total shots and equaled teammate Pippin Saunders with three shots on goal. The Tribe out-cornered the Wildcats 10-4, though their lone goal was did not come off a penalty corner.
It took nine minutes for either team to put up a shot, with the Tribe striking first as an attempt by Emma Clifton went high. The 'Cats got a pair of shots off Tyler McFayden's corner, but Johnson came up with a save on Funsten before an attempt from Davis was blocked. Another corner, this time by Julia Guthrie, resulted in another shot by Funsten that was also saved.
With the first half winding down, the Tribe got an opportunity to get on the board. Olivia Hajek stole a pass inside the circle and shot across the cage to beat Leytham, giving the Tribe the 1- 0 lead at the half.
Leytham came up with a pair of early saves in the second half, keeping the game within reach for the Wildcats. Back-to-back shots by Saunders were also stopped by Leytham, as the Tribe failed to add an insurance goal. William & Mary would get two more last second chances to add to the lead, but Leytham grabbed both attempts. However, the Wildcats could not get a shot off in the second half and would drop the 1-0 contest to the Tribe.
The Wildcats head back to Virginia next weekend, traveling to Richmond for a pair of contests. They will take on Siena in a noon match up on Saturday on the campus of VCU before facing the host Rams on Sunday, also in a noon tilt.
