BOONE, N.C. – A late second half goal wasn't enough to overtake the Mountaineers as the Davidson field hockey team struggled to find the back of the net and fell to Appalachian State 2-1 on Tuesday evening in their opening NorPac contest.
Led by Anna Davis, the Wildcats (2-3) out-shot the Mountaineers 11-4. Davis had a team-high five shots, three of which game on goal. However, it was Melissa Funsten who scored the team's lone goal of the contest. Funsten now leads the 'Cats with six goals on the season. Davidson also out-cornered ASU 10-6.
Freshman Anne Federico had three shots for the Wildcats as well, two of which came on goal.
Lindsay Amador and Jordyn Warren each notched a goal for App. State (2-3). Goalkeeper Sarah Anderson made seven stops on the night.
Warren put the Mountaineers on the board midway through the first half, gathering a loose ball in front of net and beating Carolyn Macek to the right as ASU took a 1-0 lead. Amador added another with a chip shot in the closing minutes of the first to give the Mountaineers a 2-0 lead at the half. Davis had a pair of strong shots in the half, one of which was blocked and another saved by Anderson.
Tyler McFayden opened the half with a shot on goal, but couldn't put it past Anderson. With just under seven minutes to play, Funsten put the Wildcats on the board, beating Anderson to the right following a corner shot to cut the Davidson deficit down to just on goal. She had an opportunity to tie the game in the final minutes on a penalty stroke, but could not convert as the Wildcats took the 2-1 loss.
Davidson will continue on with NorPac play Friday evening with a 5 p.m. game at Radford in Radford, Va.
