RICHMOND, Va. – The Davidson field hockey team (3-2) was unable to muster up an offense and found their defensive footing too late as they fell to the Richmond Spiders by a score of 6-0 Saturday afternoon at Crenshaw Field. All six Spider goals came in the first half of action.

Melissa Funsten attempted the Wildcats' lone shot on goal as the Spiders outshot the 'Cats 18-1. Richmond also finished with an advantage in penalty corners 7-3. Carolyn Macek made a pair of saves before Emily Leytham came into the game. In her collegiate debut, Leytham put up a strong effort, giving up just one goal while making five stops.

Kerri McDonald scored off a deflection to give the Spiders a 1-0 lead six minutes into the game. Richmond took a 2-0 lead when Taylor Dietrick scored on a break away six minutes later. Chelsea Davies and Avery Safford each added an unassisted to goal to make it a 4-0 game. Rebecca Barry notched another for the Spiders off a rebound before Davies notched her second of the game off a penalty corner to make it 6-0 at the half.

The Wildcats found their defensive footing in the second half, but still couldn't put shots on goal. Leytham made back-to-back saves early in the second half before Tyler McFayden took a penalty corner for the 'Cats. However, the Spiders regained possession and added another shot that Leytham got her hands on. Julia Guthrie took another corner for Davidson that led to a shot by Melissa Funsten, but she was unable to find the back of the net. Leytham came up with another save in the last ten seconds as the Spiders earned the 6-0 win.

Davidson will open up NorPac play Tuesday evening when they face in-state for Appalachian State. The 'Cats are set to take on the Mountaineers in a 7:45 p.m. game in Boone, N.C.
