Late Goals Put Wildcats Past Towson 2-1

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Anna Davis and Melissa Funsten each scored in the final 10 minutes of action to break a scoreless tie as the Davidson field hockey team topped the Towson Tigers 2-1 at the Maryland Field Hockey Complex Sunday afternoon. The win moves the Wildcats to 2-0 on the young season.

Davidson had outshot the Tigers 22-2 at the half, but neither team had found the back of the net. Davis, Funsten, Katherine English and Lucy Pidcock were among Wildcats that had strong shots blocked as Davidson attempted to get on the scoreboard.

The 'Cats returned the favor, blocking a pair of Towson shots early in the second period. After Tyler McFayden and Danielle King each had a shot blocked, McFayden sent a penalty corner over to Davis who put it past the Towson keeper for the 1-0 lead with just under ten minutes remaining.

Anne Federico got another shot off for the Wildcats, but her effort was blocked. With three minutes remaining, King found Funsten off another Davidson penalty corner and Funsten knock it in to give the Wildcats the 2-0 advantage with her second of the season.

Courtney Branco scored a minute later to cut Towson's deficit to just one goal at 2-1, but a last second save by Carolyn Macek ensured the Wildcats the victory.

Macek was once again solid in goal, coming up with five stops. Davis led the offensive effort, recording eight shots with five coming on goal. Funsten, Pidcock and English each had four as the 'Cats out-shot the Tigers 29-8. Davidson also held the advantage on corners 17-5.

Brittany Varacallo made 12 saves for the Tigers, while Kelly Mattingly posted a team-high three shots and a defensive save.

Davidson returns home to host the University of Vermont Friday night at Belk Turf Field. The Wildcats and the Catamounts will square off at 6 p.m.
