DAVIDSON, N.C. – In their final season in the Southern Conference, the Davidson women's soccer team was picked fourth in the league's preseason coaches' poll as announced by the SoCon today.
The Wildcats received 65 points, trailing only Furman (94), Samford (93) and UNCG (85) in the poll. All three of those schools earned first place votes, with Furman picking up five. The Paladins, who reached the championship game last year, also put a league-high five players on the preseason all-conference team, including freshman of the year and reigning player of the year Stephanie DeVita. Samford followed with three players on the team.
Davidson, celebrating 25 years of women's soccer this year, returns 21 letterwinners with 10 of those being starters. Leading scorers Julia Singley (11 points) and Stephanie Piperno (10), who each scored four goals apiece to pace the offense, return along with seven seniors. Earlier this season, Piperno was named to the College Sports Madness 2013 SoCon Preseason All-Conference Second Team at forward.
The 'Cats are coming off a 7-10-3 record in 2012, while going 5-5-1 in conference play. Head coach Greg Ashton is entering his 10th season this year and needs just five more wins to reach 100 for his coaching career at Davidson.
The Wildcats open their season at home with a pair of contests, Aug. 23 & 25, against East Carolina and Coastal Carolina. Game times are set for 7 p.m. Friday night and 2 p.m. Sunday.
