SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Davidson College athletics had a Southern Conference-best 258 student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll for the 2012-13 season as announced Thursday by the league office.
For a third year in a row, the Wildcats paced the league, which had a record 2,023 student-athletes earn spots on the SoCon Academic Honor Roll. It topped 2,000 student-athletes for the first time in conference history, surpassing the record 1,985 that were honored in 2010-11. The 25-year-old award originated in 1988-89, when SoCon athletic directors established the honor roll prior as a way to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. The academic honor roll consists of student-athletes who participated in varsity sports at member institutions and posted a 3.0 grade point average or higher while passing at least 24 hours in two semesters of classes or its equivalent for other academic calendars.
Of those more than 2,000 student-athletes on the list, 895 earned the Commissioner's Medal, awarded annually to student-athletes who attain a GPA of 3.5 or higher throughout the year. Of those, 85 had perfect 4.0 GPAs, with Georgia Southern boasting a SoCon-high 19 with perfect marks for the year.
Behind Davidson was Appalachian State with 210 student-athletes on the list. Each of the SoCon's 12 league schools had at least 118 student-athletes on the list.
Football boasted the most student-athletes on the list with 300, followed by women's soccer with 230 and women's track and field and cross country with 211. The honor roll includes all 19 SoCon-sponsored sports as well as the non-sponsored sports of field hockey, lacrosse, swimming and diving, equestrian, rifle and sailing. League schools who sponsor swimming are members of the Coastal Collegiate Swimming Association.
