GREENSBORO, N.C. – Davidson junior Andrew Lantz advanced to the quarterfinals of the 800-meter run in school-record time Thursday night at the NCAA Men's Track & Field East Region Championship hosted by North Carolina A&T at Irwin Belk Track in Aggie Stadium.
Senior Demetrios Pagonis also competed for Davidson, placing 43rd in 31:01.60 in the 10,000-meter run. The time ranks as the 10th fastest in Davidson history.
Lantz completed the 800m in a school-record 1 minute, 50.09 seconds, placing fourth in his heat and 20th overall. His time was the second fastest of runners who finished outside the Top 3 of their heat, allowing him to advance. He is the first Wildcat to advance a round at the NCAA Regionals.
Lantz, the two-time defending SoCon Champion in the event, will run again Friday at 7:15 p.m. He will need to either place in the Top 3 of his heat or post a time in the Top 3 of finishers outside the Top 3.
Pagonis' finish outside the Top 12 concludes his stellar career. He appears four times each on both the school 5000m and 10,000m performance lists in addition to holding the records in both, and won both the 5000- and 10,000-meter runs at the 2013 SoCon Outdoor Track Championships.
The race marked the first time in program history that Davidson had sent two runners to the regional meet strictly on time, as Ryan Hopkins '12 was the first last season.
