DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's lacrosse team has picked its captains for the 2014 season as seniors Paige Logan (Garden City, N.Y.) and Liz Edwards (Cincinnati, Ohio) along with junior Emily Rademacher (Lynchburg, Va.) were tabbed the captains by the team as announced recently by head coach Kim Wayne.
The trio return after helping guide Davidson to one of its best seasons in program history. The Wildcats captured the inaugural Big South Women's Lacrosse Regular Season title by going a perfect 7-0 in the league and advanced to the tournament championship game. Wayne, in her fifth season, led the 'Cats to an 11-7 record to tie the school mark set in 2008 for most wins in a season.
Logan, Edwards and Rademacher are three of the 'Cats' 18 returning letterwinners, which include six seniors. Logan and Rademacher each started all 18 games last year, while Edwards came off the bench for eight of the games.
With the loss of four key defenders to graduation, Logan will look to guide a young defense in 2014. The senior, who made the transition to defense as a sophomore, had another successful campaign in 2013. An All-Big South Second Team member, Logan registered a career-best 47 groundballs to pace Davidson. The 47 groundballs were third-most in a Wildcat single season. She also pulled in 29 draw controls and forced 16 turnovers, both second-best on the team. Logan has started all 54 of her games during her three-year career.
Rademacher, a first-team All-Big South pick, was one of the Wildcats' multiple offensive options this past season. She scored a personal-best 18 goals to go with 10 assists for a career-high 28 points. She tied for second on the team in assists, which were also a career-high. The midfielder registered four multi-goal games, including scoring three goals twice in wins vs. Kennesaw State and Longwood.
The rising junior also had personal bests of 25 draw controls and nine caused turnovers. Twice she recorded four draw controls in a game, while three times forcing three turnovers in a contest.
A key midfielder off the bench this past year, Edwards tied her personal-best with three goals. She added five groundballs, a career-high four draw controls and caused four turnovers. Edwards had a career game in a win at home vs. Presbyterian, picking up two groundballs, three draw controls and forcing a pair of turnovers to go with a goal. The midfielder has played in 35 games during her career and started 11 of them.
Davidson returns six starters for the 2014 season, as it will look to replace six seniors, four of whom started at least 17 of the 18 games. Key returners along with Logan, Edwards and Rademacher are All-Big South First Team members Ann Fucigna and Emily Cooke, who was the Big South Offensive Player of the Year. Fucigna enters her final season looking to add to her goals (153) and points (197) marks, as she is the program's all-time record holder in both categories. She broke her own single-season record for goals with 53 this past year, good for 18th most in the nation.
Cooke will look to duplicate a record-setting sophomore campaign she had in 2013. The rising junior set program single-season records in assists (55) and points (87), while scoring a career-best 32 goals. She also set a single-game record with 10 assists and tied the program's single-game mark for points with 11 in a win vs. Kennesaw State, Feb. 25. The attacker led the Big South in assists and points, and ranked in the top-10 in the nation in assists (3rd), assists per game (4th), points (8th) and points per game (8th).
