SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Davidson right-hander Nick Neitzel has been named the SoCon Pitcher of the Week for all games May 13-18 after allowing just one unearned run against Samford in the season finale, the league office announced Tuesday.
Neitzel allowed just an unearned run in a rain-shortened, complete game win over Samford, 12-1, on Saturday. The Coral Gables, Fla., native surrendered just four hits and two walks in a career-high six innings and struck out four as the Wildcats won their final regular-season series and wrapped up their season with five wins in their last six tries. It was just the sophomore's third career start and his first start in a Southern Conference game. It was also the first win of his career.
The award is the first of Neitzel's career and the lone weekly honor for the Wildcats this year. Neitzel finished the season with a 4.09 ERA and a 1-2 record in 22.0 innings pitched (11 appearances).
Citadel right fielder Tyler Griffin was named the Southern Conference Player of the Week. He returned to the Bulldog lineup after missing 18 games with a fractured foot, hitting .588 with three home runs, two doubles, five runs and 13 RBIs in The Citadel's four games.
Selections are made by the league office, and these are the final weekly honors of the 2013 season.
