SPARTANBURG, S.C. – Davidson second baseman Sam Foy was elected to the Southern Conference Baseball All-Freshman team by the league's coaches, the conference office announced Monday.
Foy started 47 games for the Wildcats during his rookie season, batting .236 with 27 RBI and a grand slam. The Wilmington, N.C. native proved to be a clutch hitter, as he had a pair of walk-off hits to help Davidson earn Southern Conference wins over Appalachian State and Furman. Foy also had success against some of Davidson's toughest competition, as he batted a combined .538 (7-for-13) in games at No. 1 North Carolina, No. 5 South Carolina and No. 6 NC State. He had three-hit games in the latter two and scored a run in each.
Foy is the fifth Wildcat to be named to the SoCon All-Freshman team since its inception in 2009, as Davidson has been represented each year.
Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own players or themselves in the voting process.
Appalachian State's Jaylin Davis highlighted the SoCon All-Freshman team picked by the coaches as he was voted the Freshman of the Year, but the SoCon Sports Media Association tabbed Benigno Marrero of UNCG as the top rookie. College of Charleston placed a league-high three players – Blake Butler, Nathan Helvey and Carl Wise – on the coaches' all-freshman team. The Mountaineers and UNCG had two each, while The Citadel, Davidson, Furman, Samford, Western Carolina and Wofford each had one representative.
Elon first baseman Ryan Kinsella was voted the Southern Conference Player of the Year by the coaches, while the media picked WCU third baseman Tyler White. Citadel right-hander Austin Pritcher was the consensus Pitcher of the Year, while Western Carolina's Bobby Moranda, who guided the Catamounts to the regular season title, was named the Coach of the Year by both the coaches and media.
Western Carolina and The Citadel shared league-best honors with six All-SoCon selections each on the coaches' all-conference teams. The Catamounts put four on the first team, while the Bulldogs had four on the second team. On the media teams, The Citadel and Western Carolina placed six members each, while Appalachian State, Elon and Samford had three each.
As a team, Davidson concluded the 2013 season with an 18-31 overall record and a 12-18 SoCon record, placing ninth a half-game shy of qualifying for the eight-team SoCon Tournament.
