INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – Southern Conference champions Demetrios Pagonis (10,000-meter run) and Andrew Lantz (800-meter run) will both represent Davidson men's track at the NCAA Track & Field East Regional Championship, the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee announced Thursday afternoon.
It marks the first time in the history of Davidson's program that two Wildcats have qualified for the same regional championship based strictly on time. Ryan Hopkins '12 was the first individual Wildcat to qualify on time alone just a year ago.
The preliminary championship competition will be held May 23-25 at North Carolina A&T in Greensboro, N.C. Both Lantz and Pagonis will compete during the first evening of competition Thursday, as Lantz will run in the first round of the 800m at 8:35 p.m. and Pagonis will run in the 10,000m at 9:40 p.m. If Lantz finishes in the Top 24 Thursday, he will compete again Friday at 7:15 p.m. The Top 12 finishers out of the East and West regions will compete in the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Outdoor Track and Field Championships held June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore.
Pagonis is the highest ranked of the Davidson duo, as his season best and school record time in the 10,000m of 29 minutes, 32.58 seconds ranks 21st of the declared runners in the event. Lantz slipped into the Top 48 with his season best and school record time of 1:50.03 in the 800m, which ranks 46th amongst declared East region runners.
Pagonis and Lantz combined for four individual championships at the Southern Conference Championships in April, as Lantz won both the 800- and 1500-meter runs, while Pagonis swept the 5000- and 10,000-meter runs.
Davidson is guided by head coach Gary Andrew, who is in his 26th season leading the 'Cats.
