DAVIDSON, N.C. – After a record-setting season, sophomore Emily Cooke was named the Big South Women's Lacrosse Player of the Year and head coach Kim Wayne was honored for guiding Davidson to the regular season title by being named the league's coach of the year, as announced Thursday evening following the tournament banquet.
In addition, seven Wildcats were named to the All-Big South first and second teams, while senior Abigail Doelger was named to the all-academic team. Joining Cooke on the first team was attacker Ann Fucigna, Midfielder Emily Rademacher, defender Doelger and goalie Jessica Melby. On the second team was midfielder Alanna Parker and defender Paige Logan.
The Wildcats captured the regular season title with a perfect 7-0 record in the first year of Big South women's lacrosse. Wayne helped lead Davidson to its second 10-win season in program history as well as a school-best seven-game win streak during the year.
Leading the charge has been Cooke, who rewrote a few Wildcat single-season and single-game records during a career sophomore campaign. The attacker broke Davidson's single-game mark for assists with 10 and tied the single-game record in points with 11 during a 20-2 win at home vs. Kennesaw State, Feb. 25. Cooke went on to set the single-season record for assists, entering the Big South Tournament with 47 total to go with her career-best 30 goals.
In the Wildcats' regular season finale, Cooke broke Fucigna's single-season points record with four in a win at Winthrop to give her 77 on the year.
Fucigna, Parker and Rademacher have been the beneficiaries of many of Cooke's assists this year as the trio combined for 94 goals during the regular season. The junior Fucigna's 48 scores are just three away from her school-best single-season goal record from last year. She set the program's all-time goals (148) and points (190) record this year. Fucigna also tied a Wildcat single-game record for goals with eight in a 19-3 win vs. Presbyterian earlier this year.
Parker reached the 30-goal mark for the fourth straight year. Her 137 scores are right behind Fucigna all-time, while her 157 career points rank fifth all-time in the Wildcat record books. She had eight multi-goal games and combined for 20 with Fucigna (12) on the year. The senior's 117 draw controls rank second all-time, behind junior Erin Doherty's 124.
Midfielder Rademacher has recorded a solid second year, scoring 16 goals and dishing out 10 assists, second-best on the team. She also has added 14 groundballs, and personal bests of 24 draw controls and eight caused turnovers.
The defensive unit of Doelger, Logan and Melby each helped Davidson hold the opposition to just 8.12 goals a game. Doelger has forced a team-best 18 turnovers to go along with 19 groundballs and 10 draw controls. The senior was a two-time National Lacrosse Conference All-Academic Team member.
Logan scooped up a team-high 40 groundballs, a new personal best for the junior. She also has pulled in 29 draw controls and forced 14 turnovers, both ranking second on the team. The tri-captain has given the Wildcats a little offensive spark as well, registering 11 points with five goals and six assists.
A three-year starter, Melby has had a strong senior campaign between the pipes. The senior leads the Big South with a career-best 8.35 goals against average, which currently is tops in a Wildcat single season, and her 47.4 save percentage is tops in the league as well. Melby has stopped 110 shots to give her 395 career saves, good for third all-time in the Wildcat record books.
High Point's Jasmone Jordan was named the Big South Defender of the Year, while Shannon Gallagher of Winthrop was honored with freshman of the year after leading the conference with 54 goals during the regular season. Lily Yednock of Coastal Carolina collected the league's scholar-athlete of the year award.
Davidson plays host for the Big South Tournament, April 26 & 28, with the Wildcats opening up against Liberty Friday at 4 p.m. in the first semifinal game.
