Duo Posts Top 10 Finish on Day One of SoCon Championships

STATESBORO, Ga. – A pair of Wildcats placed in the top 10 of their events as the Davidson women's track & field team sits eighth after day one of competition at the 2013 Southern Conference Outdoor Track & Field Championships on the campus of Georgia Southern University Saturday afternoon.
The Wildcats posted four points to sit in eighth place after the first day of the meet. Appalachian State is the team leader with 71.5 points, followed by Elon in second with 54 and Western Carolina in third with 34.5.
Natalie Atabek and Erin Osment both scored points for Davidson in the 10,000-meter run, finishing sixth and eighth, respectively. Atabek ran a career-best 37:15.91, moving into second place in Davidson program history. Osment finished in 37:25.31, besting her previous personal record by nearly a minute and jumping to third in the program's all-time rankings.
"I'm incredibly proud of them," said head coach Jen Straub. "Natalie in particular has spent a lot of time on the bike working her way back from an injury. It's great to see their hard work pay off."
Grace Watt finished just shy of qualifying for the 400-meter dash finals, taking fourth in her heat of the preliminaries. Her time of 59.09, a personal best, was good enough to put her 13th overall in the event and ties her for fourth all-time. Ashlyn Gruber was seventh in her heat, running a time of 1:00.33. She took 19th overall.
Olivia Menden and Brigid Behrens joined Watt in the prelims of the 800-meter run. Menden grabbed second in her heat, taking 11th overall. She crossed the line in a time of 2:15.57, just .01 off her personal best of 2:15.57. Behrens claimed fourth in her heat for a 17th place finish overall with a time of 2:18.89. Watt rounded out the group with a 20th place finish (fifth in her heat) in a time of 2:19.93.
In the 400-meter hurdle prelims, Kate Kostecky finished 18th overall in a time of 1:14.12.
Gracie Gordon competed in both the 200-meter dash and the long jump for the Wildcats. She took sixth in her heat of the 200m, running a time of 26.92. She then picked up a 17th place finish in the long jump, taking seventh in her flight with a mark of 15-11.50.
Cara Wilck took part in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, crossing the finish line in 12:07.94. Her time was a new personal best in the event.
The 'Cats will be back in action Sunday morning. The meet will start at 8:30 a.m. and is set to conclude with an awards ceremony set for 5:45 p.m.
