Wrestling to Compete in SoCon Championships Saturday

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Sophomore Kevin Birmingham enters as Davidson's top seed for the 2013 SoCon Wrestling Championship to be hosted by VMI Saturday at Cameron Hall in Lexington, Va.
Thirteen individual NCAA bids and the Southern Conference team title will be on the line. Regular-season champion Chattanooga will attempt to win its third straight tournament title and 27th overall.
Birmingham was seeded fifth at 149 pounds and will face four-seed Jordan Dix of The Citadel. Dix prevailed with a narrow 3-4 decision when the two met during the regular season, and both posted 3-4 SoCon records.
Scott Patrick, who led Davidson with a record of 17-9, also went 3-4 in SoCon action and is seeded sixth at 184 pounds. He will also face a Citadel wrestler in Josh Tuck, but the two did not meet during the regular season.
Matt Zarth is also seeded sixth at 141 pounds, as is Nathaniel Powers at 157 pounds. Anthony Elias is seeded seventh at 133 pounds and will face No. 2 seed Brett Boston, who he just faced in his last bout. Elias will look to avenge a 1-5 defeat.
Chris Cirenza (No. 7, 165 pounds), Ian Solcz (No. 8, 174 pounds) and Ed Isola (No. 8, 285 pounds) will also compete for Davidson.
In dual meets, as a team Davidson finished tied for seventh with SIUE at 1-6.
Three of last season's individual champions will wrestle in the 2013 championship. Chattanooga's Nick Soto, who won the 133-pound crown last year, will try for a title at 125 this season and is the top seed in the weight class.
The Mocs' Dean Pavlou, who won at 149 pounds last year and in 2010, has also dropped down a class and is the No. 2 seed at 141. The Citadel's Ugi Khishignyam, the SoCon Freshman of the Year, is the top seed in that class.
The Citadel's Odie Delaney, this season's SoCon Wrestler of the Year, is going for his fourth career title will attempt to defend his heavyweight crown as the No. 1 seed.
The NCAA has allocated the Southern Conference automatic qualifying spots at all 10 classes with an extra one each at 125, 141 and 165.
Tickets for Saturday's action, which begins at 10 a.m., will be a single-session ticket. Fans leaving the venue can re-enter simply by showing their tickets. Doors open at 9 a.m.
Prices are $15 for adults, $10 for youth and non-SoCon students with ID. Groups of 10 or more can purchase tickets at a group rate of $8 per person. Students from any of the Southern Conference schools can pick up a ticket free of charge simply by showing their school ID.
