The Match
2013 Division I Wrestling Championships
March 21-23 - Des Moines, Iowa - Wells Fargo Center
Competing in the 133-pound weight class, Davidson sophomore Anthony Elias will face ninth-seeded Northern Iowa redshirt sophomore Levi Wolfensperger Thursday, March 21 in the first round of the NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships.
Elias (11-8), who defeated 24th-ranked Sam Speno of NC State during the regular season, was seeded seventh out of eight wrestlers entering the 2013 Southern Conference Wrestling Championship this past Saturday, but defeated the top two seeds en route to the individual title at 133 pounds and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Championships. The SoCon coaches recognized Elias' feat by electing him Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament, making him the first Davidson wrestler to win the award.
Wolfensperger finished second at the Mid-American Conference Championships to earn his automatic bid, and enters with a 23-8 record. He went to the NCAA Championships last season at 141 pounds after winning the Western Wrestling Conference Championship in the weight class. UNI departed the WWC to join the MAC this season.
The winner of the match between Elias and Wolfensperger will face the winner of the match between eighth-seeded Cody Brewer (Oklahoma) and Matt Brystol (Columbia). The loser will have to compete in the pigtail wrestleback match, No. 172, and face the loser of the first-round pigtail-match (No. 2), which features Geoffrey Alexander (Maryland, 22-9) and Devon Lotito (Cal Poly, 24-5).

Storylines
- Anthony Elias is Davidson's second conference champion since 1969 and first since 2010 when Alex Radsky '11 won the title at the same weight class. He is also the second Davidson wrestler to go to the NCAA?Tournament since 1999 and the first since Radsky in 2010.
- Elias overcame an early-season injury and entered the SoCon tournament with an 8-8 overall record and 2-4 SoCon mark. Seeded seventh out of eight, he defeated No. 2 seed Brett Boston of Applachian State, to whom he had lost to in the regular season finale. He then knocked off No. 6 Robert Golde of Gardner-Webb, to whom he had lost to in January. In the Championship Final, he defeated No. 1 Aaron Hansen, who he had never faced before.
- The Southern Conference coaches recognized Elias' feat by electing him Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament. Elias is the first Davidson wrestler to ever win the award.
- Like 2010 NCAA qualifier Alex Radsky, Elias has an identical twin on the team. Philip Elias starts at 125 pounds for the Wildcats, but has had his first two seasons cut short by injury.
- Davidson is also being represented in the men's basketball tournament, playing No. 3 seed Marquette in Lexington, Ky. as a No. 14 seed. Tip is scheduled for 3:10 ET Thursday.
GOING FOR?NO. 2: Kerry Keith is the only Davidson wrestler to win a match at the NCAA Tournament, doing so in 1968. Wrestling at 177 pounds, he pinned Penn State's Phil Liller in 1:43 in the preliminaries, but dropped a 13-3 decision to Army's Jim Harter in the quarterfinals. His pin scored Davidson two points to tie for 52nd out of 102 schools.
HIGH?SCHOOL?REUNION: Elias could face a high school teammate if he loses his first-round match. If Maryland's Geoffrey Alexander also loses, he went to Shady Side Academy, as well, and would face Elias in the first consolation match.
FAMILIAR TERRITORY: Head coach Bob Patnesky is no stranger to NCAA tournament. A 2001 graduate of West Virginia, Patnesky was a three-time NCAA qualifier and is still the Mountaineers' all-time winningest wrestler at 126/133 pounds. Patnesky was the 2000 Eastern Wrestling League champion, helping his team win the EWL crown and a sixth-place finish nationally.
