WILMINGTON, N.C. — The Wildcats hit the road for the first time this year and ran into a tough opponent as UNC Wilmington took a 7-0 decision over Davidson Saturday afternoon in men's tennis.
The Wildcats (6-2) saw their season-best six-match win streak come to an end. They were off to their best start since 2003 when the 'Cats won five of their first six matches to open the year.
UNCW continued its mastery at home, moving to 7-0 there and 8-3 overall on the season. The Seahawks were ranked as high as 37th back on Feb. 19 in the Top-75 ITA rankings.
The Seahawks took the doubles point to start the match, winning 8-2 and 8-1 at No. 1 and 3, respectively, while then sweeping all six singles matches for the shutout win.
In doubles action, the No. 1 Wildcat team of Chris Mark and Kevin Moore saw their team-best five-match win streak coming to an end, falling to 5-2 on the campaign.
Nicky Kunz and Joe Schafer each battled it out at the No. 1 and 2 spots against UNCW. Kunz saw his three-match win streak halted by Chris Cooprider by the score of 7-5, 6-4. The sophomore fell to 4-2 on the season.
Schafer, riding a personal-best tying five-match win streak, fell 6-3, 6-3 to Sam Williams to drop his first singles match since opening the year against Clemson. The senior is 5-2 on the year, with his first defeat coming at No. 2 today.
Connor Evins (2-6, 1-6) and Alex Howard (0-6, 2-6) also had their three-match win streaks stopped at No. 5 and 6 singles positions.
The Wildcats turn around and play at Coastal Carolina tomorrow at 1 p.m.
