CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Senior Demetrios Pagonis won the 5000-meter run at the Charlotte 49ers Invitational in a school-record 14 minutes, 9.96 seconds to lead Davidson men's track and field on Irwin Belk Track Friday afternoon.
Pagonis bested the record set just last season by Ryan Hopkins '12 at the Raleigh Relays. Pagonis' previous personal best was 14:17.27, which he accomplished in the same race.
Davidson also had several student-athletes compete in the sprints and hurdles preliminaries, but none were able to advance to the finals. Freshman Charles Rappe came the closest, placing just outside the top eight in the 400-meter hurdles in 56.71 seconds.
Sophomore Sal del Giudice led Davidson in the 1500-meter run, placing 15th in 3:58.78.
Competition in the outdoor season-opening meet continues Saturday.
