Men’s Track & Field Places Fourth at SoCon Indoor Championships

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Led by Demetrios Pagonis' second-place finish in the 5000-meter run, the Davidson men's track and field team placed fourth at the 2013 Southern Conference Indoor Track & Field Championships at the JDL Fast Track on Sunday.
Pagonis was looking to defend his title in the 5000m, but Paul Katam of UNCG completed the event in 14:13.77, while Pagonis finished in 14:29.63.
Sophomore Wesley Laytham placed seventh in the 800-meter run in 1:57.78, and contributed to Davidson's seventh-place 4x400-meter relay effort, along with Cyrus Bahram, Sal del Giudice and Charles Rappe. The group finished in in 3:27.86.
The Appalachian State men won the team title with 183.50 points followed by Samford with 179 points and Western Carolina with 161.50 points in the final standings. Davidson trailed with 30 points.
A trio of school records fell on the first day of action.
Pagonis placed third in the 3,000-meter run in a Davidson program record time of 8:13.02. He finished nearly three seconds faster than the previous record, which he also owned. The distance medley relay team of del Giudice, Bahram, Will Mitchell and Andrew Lantz also set a new Davidson mark, taking fourth in a time of 10:10.08. Lantz ran the 1600-meter leg in 4:09.
Junior Stewart Dalton set a new school indoor long jump record to place sixth with a leap of 22-2 1/4 (6.76m), breaking the record held by Matt Brown since 1998 of 21-11 3/4 (6.70m).
Teammate Vincent Weir also recorded a top-10 finish at the meet in the 3,000, taking seventh overall. Weir crossed the line in 8:25.03, and was followed by Daniel Samet who ran an 8:43.72 to finish 15th in the race.
Xzavier Killings placed 10th in the high jump, recording a height of 1.83 meters. He also competed in the prelims of the 200m dash, taking second in his heat with a time of 23.42.
In other field events, Michael Lorensten took eighth in the pole vault. He posted a height of 4.44m to score points for the 'Cats.
