DAVIDSON, N.C. — In addition to Laura Murray's first career double-double (24 points, 11 rebounds), Davidson closed the contest on a 13-6 run to defeat Furman, 73-66, in Southern Conference women's basketball action Monday evening at Belk Arena.
With the win, the Wildcats improve to 5-6 overall and 2-0 in league play for the third straight season and seventh time in the last eight, while the Paladins fall to 5-5 and 1-1. Davidson also won its fifth straight in the series vs. Furman and improved to 13-4 in the last 17 meetings.
After Furman tied the game 60-60 on a Brittany Hodges' layup with 5:08 left, the Wildcats responded with an 8-0 run, highlighted by five points from Murray to put the game out of reach.
Murray, who went 9-of-12 from the charity stripe, was joined in double figures by Dakota Dukes and Hannah Early with 17 points each. Dukes was just as effective from the line going 9-for-13 and Davidson as a team swished home 23 total free throws.
Davidson, which assisted on all 12 of its first-half field goals, used nine straight points from Murray late in the period to go up, 34-26, before going to the break with a 35-30 lead. She had 12 points and six boards in the half.
The Wildcats never trailed after tying things up at 2-2 with 19:05 in the first half, leading by as many as nine throughout the game.
Janice Roberts paced four Furman players in double digits with 15 points, while Hodges added 13 and Sarah Durdaller and Brigid Morrissey scored 12 each. The Paladins saw their four-game win streak come to an end.
The Wildcats shot 45.1 percent from the floor to Furman's 41.2 percent clip. Despite the loss, the Paladins held a 44-34 advantage on the glass, getting 16 of those rebounds on offense. They also had a 40-32 edge on points in the paint.
Davidson takes a 12-day break, before continuing its six-game homestand by playing host to cross-county rival Charlotte Saturday, Dec. 21, at 1 p.m.
GAME NOTES: The Wildcats are 27-29 all-time vs. Furman … Murray's 24-point outing, the second game in a row she's scored over 20, was her seventh 20-point game of the season and 24th of her career … the senior is just 35 points away from moving into second place all-time in school history in points, sitting with 1,476 after tonight … for the fourth time this year, and second straight game, every single Wildcat who played scored a bucket ... Davidson's 23 free throws made it the fifth time this year it has swished home 20-plus shots at the charity stripe.
