2013 Academic All-Pioneer Football Team
ST. LOUIS – Davidson's Bryant Bednarek, Colin Merrill and Chris Gorman were elected to the 2013 Academic All-Pioneer Football League First Team, the league office announced Wednesday afternoon.
A total of 50 Pioneer Football League student-athletes were selected to the 21st annual Academic All-PFL teams, as selected by the league's sports information directors. The Academic All-PFL teams are a complement to the Capital One Academic All-America program presented by the College Sports Information Directors of America. Eleven PFL student-athletes also were named to their respective Capital One Academic All-District Teams this fall, including Bednarek and Merrill. The Capital One Academic All-America Teams will be announced Thursday.
Bednarek, a junior from Westerville, Ohio, and an economics major, has started the last 22 games at safety for the Wildcats and ranked fourth on the team this past season with 64 tackles. He also broke up a pair of passes and recovered a fumble. Bednarek made a season-high 11 stops at Morehead State (Sept. 28) and had nine solo tackles at Jacksonville.
Fellow junior Merrill, a Circleville, Ohio native and biology major, excelled in his first season as a starter for Davidson at cornerback. He finished the season fifth on the team with 49 tackles and was among the team leaders with three pass breakups and two blocked kicks. He also made his first career interception.
Gorman, a senior mathematics and economics major from Chagrin Falls, Ohio, demonstrated his commitment to the Wildcats this past season by pitching in as a kickoff specialist. Unable to continue his career as a running back due to injury, Gorman filled a void for the 'Cats on special teams by handling the kickoff duties.
Pioneer Football League athletic directors established the Academic All-PFL squads in 1993 as a way to recognize the league's outstanding student-athletes. To be eligible for Academic All-PFL consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 on a scale of 4.00 and reached his second season both athletically and academically at his current institution.
