2013 All-Pioneer Football League Team
SAINT LOUIS, Mo. – Davidson junior linebacker Matt Casey was named to the 2013 All-Pioneer Football League second team, while William Morris and Dan Casey earned honorable mentions, the league office announced Tuesday afternoon.
Sixty student-athletes were named to the 21st version of the All-Pioneer Football League squads, while 69 earned honorable mentions. All selections were made by the league's coaches, who were not permitted to vote for their own student-athletes.
Matt Casey (Powell, Ohio/Olentangy Liberty) enjoyed a breakout season in his first year as a starter, making 106 tackles (9.6 per game) to lead the team and rank 27th in the nation and fourth in the PFL. The total also ranks as the fourth-most in a single-season in Davidson history. Casey also had three stops behind the line, including 2.5 sacks, and made one interception that he returned 17 yards against Marist (Oct. 19). He posted double-digit tackles in four games, making a career-best 13 stops against Lenoir-Rhyne (Sept. 14) and at Dayton (Oct. 5), and 12 tackles at Morehead State (Sept. 28) and vs. Mercer (Nov. 2).
Morris (Dallas, Texas/Highland Park) was another breakout performer for the Wildcats, as the sophomore moved into the starting lineup in the second game of the season at wide receiver and nearly set a school single-season record for receiving yards. He finished the year with 1,090 yards, the third-most in Davidson history, to lead the PFL and rank ninth in the country with 99.1 yards per game. Morris also ranked second in the league and 28th nationally with 6.1 receptions per game (67 total) and had five touchdowns. He posted five 100-plus receiving yard games with a career-high 188 yards on seven catches and a touchdown at Johnson C. Smith (Sept. 21), and he made a career-high 11 receptions against Marist.
Dan Casey (Tega Cay, S.C./Westminster Catawba Christian), a senior linebacker and also a first-time starter in 2013, started in all nine games he appeared in and made a career-high 66 tackles, ranking second on the team and 12th in the conference with 7.4 per game. The team honor committee member led the team with 10.0 tackles for loss, ranking eighth in the PFL with 1.1 per game, and sacks with 4.0. After missing two games due to injury, Casey returned against Marist and made eight stops, including two sacks. The following week at Jacksonville (Oct. 26) he made a career-high 10 tackles, of which nine were solo stops. Casey matched his 10-tackle performance at Stetson (8 solo) with 1.5 sacks. He also finished the season with three pass breakups.
Marist defensive lineman Terrence Fede was the lone unanimous selection to the All-PFL teams – the second consecutive year he has earned unanimous first-team All-PFL honors. In addition, Marist offensive lineman Phede Celestin becomes the 42nd student-athlete to earn first-team All-PFL honors three times during their career. Dayton led the league with six first-team honorees, while San Diego led with 14 student-athletes named to both the league's first and second teams.
The Academic All-PFL team will be released Wednesday, concluding the league's awards week.
