DAVIDSON, N.C. – Caroline Brown recorded her 56th career double-double in her final game at Belk Arena to lead the Davidson volleyball team to a 3-2 upset win over SoCon leader Georgia Southern Saturday afternoon. The Wildcats took the match in set scores of 25-21, 22-25, 19-25, 26-16 and 15-12 to hand the Eagles just their fifth loss of the season and their third in SoCon action.

Prior to the match, Davidson (15-13, 6-8 SoCon) honored graduating seniors Brown, Megan Chamberlin, Taylor Pisel, Jenna Ptaschinski and Tindall Sewell.

Brown led the team with 20 kills and 19 digs, also adding a pair of service aces. Pisel had 10 kills to go along with five block assists, while Chamberlin contributed nine kills and a pair of crucial aces as well as seven digs.  Sewell put seven kills down, hitting a team-best .267 in the victory. The Wildcats hit .122 as a team with 53 kills and 33 errors.

Six different Davidson players contributed to the team's 13.0 blocks, led by freshman Emily Franklin's outstanding effort of two solo blocks paired with five block assists. Pisel and Sewell each chipped in five block assists, with setter Mikayla Derochie adding three. Rachel Earnhardt had the squad's other solo block of the outing, adding a block assist as well.

Derochie assisted on 47 of the club's 53 kills, adding an ace and a pair of kills in addition to seven digs. Libero Morgan Shannon led the defensive effort, digging a match-high 22 balls while also putting up a pair of aces.

Jamie DeRatt had a team-high 19 kills with 14 digs for a double-double for the Eagles (23-5, 11-3 SoCon). Kym Coley had 13 kills, and Crysten Curry was one of the blocking leaders on the day with 8.0 total blocks. Katalin Minnerly finished with 50 assists on 62 Eagle kills, while Alexandra Beecher had a team-high 18 digs. GSU hit .156 with 34 errors in the match.

After calling timeout, the Wildcats overcame a 14-10 Eagle lead in set one to tie the set 16-16. Chamberlin gave them a 17-16 lead with a kill and a pair of GSU errors stretched the advantage to 21-18 soon after. Three points in a row for the Cats set up set-point, and two plays later Chamberlin would close things out for Davidson with a 25-21 win.

Davidson was forced once again to erase a deficit in set two, coming back from a 9-4 disadvantage to knot the score at 10-10. The teams traded points to a 21-21 tie before a 3-0 spurt by the Eagles pushed the Wildcats to the brink. Brown extended the set with a kill but Curry had on for GSU to take the 25-22 win and tie the match 1-1.

Georgia Southern took a slim lead to start the third set, and never looked back. A mini 3-0 rally brought the Wildcats within one at 19-18, but the Eagles claimed the final four points to win the set 25-19 and take the match lead at 2-1.

The Wildcats were down, but not out. After battling to an 11-11 tie, Davidson rattled off six straight with a trio of blocks to take a 17-12 lead. The Cats took the momentum and rolled, with Brown and Franklin each slamming down a pair of kills to take the set 25-16 and force a fifth game.

Trading points once again, Davidson picked up two scores in a row to lead 6-4. They stretched the advantage to 9-5 before the Eagles regrouped and rallied to tie the set 11-11 on a kill by Katie Bange. Chamberlin then came up with back-to-back aces to put Davidson in position to claim the win. After a Wildcat miscue, the Eagles served an error themselves as Davidson took the 15-12 victory to win the match 3-2.

Davidson will close out the regular season next weekend with a pair of SoCon road trips. First stop for the Wildcats is Greensboro, N.C, where they will face the UNCG Spartans on Friday at 7 p.m. They will then head to Elon to square off with the Phoenix in a 7 p.m. contest.
