GREENSBORO, N.C. – Caroline Brown had a match-high 13 kills, but the Davidson offense couldn't keep up with a UNCG team hitting .324 as the Wildcats took a 3-1 loss to the Spartans in Southern Conference action Friday evening at Fleming Gymnasium. The Cats (15-14, 6-9 SoCon) fell by set scores of 15-25, 21-25, 25-19 and 11-25.Â
Â
Brown was the lone Davidson player in double-figure kills, also adding nine digs, an ace and a block assist for 14.5 points. Emily Franklin just missed joining her, totaling nine kills in the match to go along with a team-best .444 attacking percentage and seven total blocks. Megan Chamberlin had eight kills and five digs as the Wildcats put down 36 kills and nine team blocks while hitting .169 in the contest.
Â
Mikayla Derochie had 31 assists in the match to go with two total blocks and three digs Morgan Shannon led the defense with 13 dug balls. Taylor Pisel also had a strong defensive effort with five block assists and three digs.
Â
Karrian Chambers had a double-double of 17 kills and 11 digs in leading the Spartans (17-12, 10-6). Olivia Humphries added 13 kills, while Katherine Santiago led the defense with 18 digs. Sara Homan assisted on 51 of UNCG's 67 kills, scoring with a trio of service aces and a trio of blocks as well. Kelsey Sidney also had 11 kills for the Spartans, who finished with six team blocks.
Â
UNCG took a 14-10 lead midway through the first set on a Davidson error and never looked back. Four in a row made it an 18-11 set, and they finished things off with back-to-back kills soon after for the 25-15 victory.
Â
Despite a tight battle early on, four consecutive points put UNCG at a 16-10 advantage at the midpoint of the second set. The Wildcats rallied for three straight with a pair of kills from Pisel and Brown, but could only cut the deficit to three at 24-21. UNCG came back from a timeout to nail the final kill, taking a 2-0 lead after grabbing the 25-21 win.
Â
In set three it was the Wildcats who raced out to a 10-4 lead on a kill from Franklin. However, the Spartans rolled to six straight to tie the match before taking a 13-12 lead. The Cats countered with four in a row to lead 21-16, and Franklin and Pisel combined for four of the last five points as the Wildcats won the set 25-19 to trail 2-1 in the match.
Â
UNCG worked its way to a 13-5 advantage in the fourth set, later taking a 16-7 lead and forcing Davidson to call a timeout. The break did little to help as the Spartans soon picked up four straight points on a trio of kills and an ace to lead the set 21-9. The Wildcats capitalized on a pair of errors, but it was too little, too late as the Spartans slammed down four kills to win the set 25-11 and earn the 3-1 match victory.
Â
The Wildcats will close out the regular season Saturday evening at Elon. They will meet the Phoenix in a 7 p.m. match in Elon, N.C.Â
