DAVIDSON, N.C. - A pair of Davidson defensive backs, Colin Merrill and Bryant Bednarek, were named to the Capital One Academic All-District III First Team, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA), it was announced Thursday.
As first team selections, the junior duo will be eligible for consideration for the Capital One Academic All-America team.
Bednarek, a Westerville, Ohio native and economics major, has started the last 20 games at safety for the Wildcats and ranks third on the team with 53 tackles. He has broken up a pair of passes this season and recovered a fumble. Last season, he was second on the team with 77 tackles, which ranked fifth amongst Pioneer Football League defensive backs.
Merrill, a Circleville, Ohio native and biology major, has excelled in his first season as a starter for Davidson at cornerback. Against Marist, he made his first career interception and blocked an extra point. As an underclassman, Merrill primarily saw action on special teams, but he has played in all but three games during his career. This season he has three passes defended and 37 tackles.
To be eligible for Academic All-America® consideration, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative G.P.A. of 3.30 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standings at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director. Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 18,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA, covering all NCAA championship sports.
Davidson plays at Stetson Saturday at 3 p.m.
