DAVIDSON, N.C. – Freshman Ashley Finke was honored by the league's coaches after her outstanding first year with a spot on the women's soccer SoCon All-Freshman Team as announced today by the Southern Conference office.
Finke was part of the 11-member team, becoming the fifth Wildcat to earn a spot on the team since 2009. Davidson has also had four freshman of the year honorees in its 25-year history.
"I'm extremely pleased for Ashley to be recognized by the conference coaches for her efforts this season," said head coach Greg Ashton. "There was a large number of talented freshmen that joined the SoCon this year, so it's a nice honor for her to be included on this all-freshman team."
A local product from Charlotte Latin in Charlotte, N.C., Finke played in 18 of Davidson's 21 games this year and started six of those games. The freshman led all Wildcat first-year players with three goals and seven points, good for third on the team.
Finke had her first career two-goal game in leading the Wildcats to a 4-3 victory at Francis Marion, helping head coach Ashton win his 100th game at Davidson.
She was credited with her first collegiate assist against Appalachian State when she crossed in a pass to Sarah Tuggle six minutes into the start of the game.
Furman, which won the regular season, took home two of the three major awards, as Andrew Burr was named SoCon Coach of the Year and Carlie Couch was the league's freshman of the Year.
Elon's Nicole Dennion grabbed the SoCon Player of the Year and was one of four Phoenix to earn all-league first or second team honors. Furman led the way with six players combined on both teams.
Davidson finished its 25th season with a 6-11-4 record and 4-5-1 in league play. The Wildcats played in their final SoCon Tournament last weekend, Nov. 3, and fell 3-1 to second-seeded Elon. The 'Cats move to the Atlantic-10 next season.
